Hold On To Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers

This book’s main focus is attachment. It teaches us that attachment is instinctive for the child and most naturally towards the parents. That this is how it is intended and what is right and how it always was. However, as society has evolved children are now replacing healthy, nurturing parent-child attachment with attachment to peers and how dangerous that shift has been. It is very thorough and analytical, but extremely important and well-thought out.

Everything You Need To Know About Homeschooling: A Comprehensive, Easy-to-Use Guide for the Journey from Early Learning through Graduation

I read this one early on in the season where I was still on the fence and exploring whether this was a worthwhile path for my son and a possibility for our family. It was extremely informative with an easy going approach which helped me dissect in the ins and outs of what would be expected should we choose to move forward with homeschooling. It’s easily sectioned out by student level so you can also go straight to the parts that are most relevant for your children. This book not only helped me understand what I needed to do next, but it got my husband and I excited to get started.

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

In a world where doing more, saying yes, making yourself available and taking on every challenge that comes your way has become increasingly normal, Essentialism challenges you to take a step back, remember you can control how you spend your time, and truly prioritize in a way you haven’t previously done. Time is truly a finite resource for each of us; a precious one we shouldn’t take for granted. Essentialism helps us remember how valuable that time is and to analyze what exactly we want to do with it. While written from more of a business perspective, the theories shared are just as applicable to everyday life, as well as raising and educating children. Applying Greg’s theories has been something my husband and I continuously bring into our home.

This book follows a discussion between an older philosopher and a young man who dissect past experiences and possible future outcomes until they conclude that your life is truly in your hands, regardless of past experiences and situations. Dismantling the concept of trauma and how it can be used as a crutch and excuse in one’s future endeavors, or lack thereof. Its conversational tone and back-and-forth dialogue layout makes for an excellent read aloud, which is how my husband and I initially enjoyed it.

Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren’t Growing Up

While I can totally see how this book can be labeled as controversial, it is so eye-opening and needed in today’s quick-fix world that has unfortunately turned mental illness and therapy sessions into trendy parts of one’s life. Shrier doesn’t hold back and underlines the ways in which modern therapy has often resulted in more confusion and depression amongst our most easily-influenced generations. Definitely something that parents and educators should take seriously.
